In April 2019 we spent nearly two weeks in the Midlands of England visiting locations and sites important to Hundy family history. I've uploaded a selection of photos that capture the trip.

This image of William is of a man nearing the end of his life and determined to be recorded for posterity having likely suffered a mild stroke.

The notice published in the Mudgee Guardian on Friday, 24th of November 1899 reported the death of William ‘James’ Hundy describing him as one of the district’s oldest identities; his longevity earning him the nickname, the ‘Old Man of Meroo’. Characteristic of the time, his life was eulogised euphemistically, carefully stepping around any direct mention of his convict past preferring instead to focus on the achievements of his children and involvement with local luminaries. William’s life, though not uncommon for the time, encapsulates the pioneering experiences of colonial Australia particularly in the Mudgee and Coonamble districts. William, born in rural Crowle, England, lived a long and eventful life ending with a large and extended family of ten children - ensuring an enduring legacy.
